It’s Not You, It’s Me

July 9, 2010

Dear Fantasy,

I want you to know that I still like you. You have lovely worlds. You’ve taken me places I’ve never even dreamed of. And your looks? Trust me, your covers are so pretty.

You are full of adventures. You really are made of magic.

So I’m really sorry but right now…I’m just not that into you.

I try. I really do. I give you a shot a few chapters at a time but if I’m honest it’s a struggle to get through those and I’m happy to set you aside and leave you until it’s time to return you to the library.

And it’s not just you. Me and YA? We’re struggling too and you know how much I love me my YA.

Fantasy, I’m taking a little break from you. Don’t worry, I’ll call you the next time I’m in town. We’ll hook up, have a few drinks…maybe even get back together and have a fling or two.

Until then, please don’t call. Please don’t write. Let’s just quietly go our separate ways for a bit.

It’s not you, it’s me.

Oh, the same thing happens to me every year. I either burn myself out trying to read everything, now, or I get bored with them.

Luckily, fantasy/sci-fi/ya/nonfiction always forgive me in the end. It just takes awhile.

    P.S. Congrats on the house.

Thanks! We’re excited by the house. Right now I’m having trouble focusing on most books but fantasy? I just can’t do it and haven’t been able to for awhile. It’s a shame, there’s so much good fantasy out.

Huh- you articulate it better than I have recently. I went off fantasy and didn’t even notice. Scifi too I think.
I’m into Regency stuff lately. Which is another sort of fantasy when you think about it.

Well, if you really want to think about that way all fiction is fantasy in a sense. Enjoy your Regency binge. I have a pile of Heyer’s that are waiting for me. Well, they are on boxes right now so let’s hope I don’t get the regency itch in the next few weeks. ;)

I have to change authors, genres, etc. on a regular basis. I don’t think I have ADD but I have to change activities frequently. If I’m playing games with my family I can play for hours, as long as we switch games fairly often. The same with reading. The only exception is mysteries. I can read several in a row, if they are not in the same series. Strange, I know.

I tend to go through phases (sometimes short, sometimes long) but I can usually handle a fantasy book thrown into just about any mix. Just not lately.

I’ve never been a big mystery fan. I like mysteries but I’m a bit impatient when it comes to reading them. I want to know who did it and I want to know NOW.

I had this convo with fantasy recently myself. Specifically YA fantasy. I’m finding Justin Cronin’s version of sci-fi just the ticket, though.

Yes, YA fantasy seems to really be hard for me right now. And very, very sadly I can’t seem to get into a steampunk novel for the life of me. It really does make me sad. Love steampunk!

I’m scared to try sci-fi right now.

[...] I read a fantasy novel. Not sure if I ever consciously rejected or went off the genre, the way Sassymonkey, one of my favorite book bloggers, has. Just hadn’t been reading much of it, or even prowling [...]
