Ballet Shoes
April 29, 2009
Noel Streatfeild‘s Ballet Shoes is another one of those books that I just don’t know how I missed when I was a kid. It’s right up there with A Secret Garden and The Little Princess. It utterly charmed me.
I don’t even know where to start. Seriously, I don’t. GUM’s collection of orphans? (Also, love that they call him GUM.) I loved Sylvia and Nana. The girls were wonderful. The boarders they took in were perfect. Their struggle with poverty and the girls determination to work to earn money for their family.
I loved it all. I’m horribly disappointed that my library doesn’t have the other “shoe” books.
Question for you all, if I wanted to watch the DVD do I get the one with Angela Thorne, Barbare Lott, Elizabeth Morgan and Sarah Prince or do I get the more recent one with Emma Watson, Lucy Boynton and Yasmin Paige?

Really!
Just shows how wrong one can be. I was so put off by that book’s title, I never read it. I must have been a real snob when I was a little girl.

I loved this book and the other Shoes books as a kid. If your library does interlibrary loans at all, you might still be able to get them. Skating Shoes and Circus Shoes were (okay, are) too of my favorites. I liked Movie Shoes a lot too, and she wrote this book called Thursday’s Children, about plucky orphans living in a grim orphanage, that was great.

I’ve only seen the movie with Emma Watson. I enjoyed it, it was actually quite good. The whole cast was quite good, and the music in the movie was fabulous.

I didn’t read this when I was a kid, either! I should remedy that now!

Masha, I think if you enjoyed books like The Little Princess and the Secret Garden you’ll enjoy this one.
Jenny, I’ll keep my eyes out for the other Shoes books & Thrusday’s Children. I’m kind of surprised the library doesn’t have more them.
Phyllis, there was a movie done in the 70s and then the Emma Watson one just came out a year or two ago. It was pretty nice actually (minor plot changes).
Court – I watched it last night. I noticed the music! It was fantastic!
Kailana – yes, you should! lol

Another book from You’ve Got Mail that I need to read! Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan coerced me to read Pride and Prejudice, and this one is on my list, too!

I never read these books as a kid. In fact, I’d never heard of them until I saw ‘You Got Mail’. I really should get around to reading one or two of them.

Hey I saw this on DarlaD’s blog (Books & other Thoughts) just recently and it had a different cover which drew me to it. Hmm. I really need to check this out now.
